Culture is far less pure than we usually assume, our biggest concern was on how to get Kitenge clothes that represented our culture. Kitenge (Vitenge is the Swahili plural) is made of cotton fabric with wax print. It is very popular in East Africa. The beauty of Kitenge is that it is known as a textile that tells stories. The Kitenge always has a way of representing a cultural background, a social position, or just a mood and a feeling.

In 2018, we decided to start a designing company called Cultural Couture, after doing our research on how we can get these kind of clothes we realized that through the One Belt One Road initiation the Kitenge fabric is now being imported in China from East Africa and many sellers that are from Kenya and Tanzania specifically they reside in Guangzhou. So now there is a way to easily get the fabric and this is mainly possible because of the One Belt One Road.

We organized a team of five members Janet, Jesca, Emily, Dayness and Sandy. Janet receives clients and consults them on what design they want and suggest designs that are on fashion and will match with the clients body so that they may look smart and good, then Jesca takes measurements of the clients and create a pattern for the clients design and sews the clothes while Emily handles the packaging and making sure that all goods are received to the clients on time, Sandy is the marketing manager and most of the times deals with advertisement and bringing more clients to the company and finally Dayness is the one handling all the financing by securing them for the long term plans. As our name suggests our focus is to provide Culture wear and accessories.

Most women use Kitenge to tailor their own clothes or they wear it as a sarong wrapped around the waist in Africa. Today, it is used by many especially designers to make anything from clothes, tablecloths to curtains and many more. We use this beautiful fabric for making dresses, trousers, shirts and t-shirts for both male and female, purses and bags especially in interior wise and exterior wise as well as the same Kitenge we use to make pillow cases and table clothes and also bags that serve as packaging for our clients.

Culture Couture is a store that caters to the African and Chinese Kitenge fashion in China. We design clothes that match our clients’ desires, we design unique clothes that are trendy and fashionable. As our name suggests our focus is to provide culture wear apparel, accessories and position ourselves as the top retail store servicing this particular market. Cultural Couture was established mainly with the intention to create a clothing style that caters to the apparel needed by the Urban Africa-Chinese students and earn at least 80% market share and become the number one ethnic western wear apparel store in Wenzhou Chashan and achieve a recognized brand name in the local community.

China has been the emerging economic country in the world and through the basic policy of opening-up and this system has strengthened the Belt and Road. The Belt and Road Initiative has opened the way for people to see many opportunities. When we came in China and faced the problem of not having cultural design to wear in different gathering like festivals and dinner parties and sometimes even just casual outings.

Our company started with designing different clothes for Africans, different types of clothes especially dresses, t-shirts, handbags, wallets and accessories. We then came up with this idea during 2018 and started to expand to other international students because the demand was high and in 2019, we started to spread this culture down to the Chinese.

We market our products through the celebrities from our school we use them to advertise for the company by wearing the clothes and accessories that were deigned in our company. At the beginning we didn’t have enough capital for us to start advertise everything. We sent the flyers to the people especially at time we are done producing everything and gave out a 20% off discount to the first 50 people who came to our company to design different clothes for different occasions.

Since the creation of this company, we have participated in two regional competition, the first one was The Wenzhou City Longman District (High-Tech Zone) The Fourth College Student Entrepreneurship Competition and in this friendly competition we received the third prize. And it elevated us a step forward to the next competition and there our company got a chance to show our products and present a short business proposal to the judges.
